Sushi Shipyards

About the artwork

Sushi Shipyards is inspired by the artist’s relationship with their partner. Before September 2022, Kelcy had never tried sushi before. With encouragement from their partner, who’s favourite food is sushi, Kelcy tried it and fell in love with it. It has become one of their favourite foods. They now enjoy sharing special moments at omakase restaurants when they Food is a love language. Many cultures use food as a form of care and to develop stronger bonds with loved ones. It is what builds our cultures and gives us space to belong to, especially for folks away from their homes. Food paves the way for our communities and often defines what home feels like.

About the artist

Kelcy Timmons Chan (they/them) is a Cantonese Canadian American queer pop artist and mural painter. By painting little purple people and giant food, they explore what it looks like to find community and belonging. Kelcy promotes and supports local businesses, family-run restaurants and queer community spaces, by creating art that showcases how food and people shape community and culture.

Fun facts

  • Kelcy got to know the neighbourhood quite well in August and September 2023 because Kelcy first painted a Ramen mural at 200 Victoria St first. The condo next door liked the piece so much they hired Kelcy to paint this gate for them right afterwards.
  • The mural took 85 hours over 15 days to complete, and Kelcy has a Stories Highlight on Instagram that has dozens of timelapses videos of the painting process if you would like to see the mural come to life.
